NaNo Day 15: Pause

This has possibly been the least productive day in the history of least productive days.

So far today I read like a hundred pages of a book for fun, watched endless cooking videos on Facebook, got my Book Creators post up (which really just involved pressing the publish button), critiqued a couple of essays for friends, got my NaNo writing done for the day, aaand… that’s basically it. I’m yet to even glance at my homework. Or work on any other work, for that matter.

On the upside: bumming it for a day can be nice?

Either way, I’m back to the grind tomorrow. Here’s hoping I haven’t put myself too far behind on things.

Goal for Today: 1,000
Overall Goal: 26,000
Current Word Count: 26,181

Anyone else hitting pause on life at the halfway point this month? I think we all deserve a good nap.

NaNo Day 14: Slowly But Surely

So, I don’t really have anything interesting to share from today. I didn’t end up getting any writing done last night. (I was still so asfknakrsnlkrn over everything that I just read Carry On and listened to the Finding Neverland cast recording until I fell asleep, which even then took about a billion hours.)

BUT I have been writing almost nonstop since I woke up this morning, so, a tally of today’s accomplishments:

  • Wrote a blog post for The Book Creators! (Will be going up probably tomorrow?) It’s about NaNoWriMo and recycling ideas.
  • Wrote my first blog post for [art]seen, the blog I’m now contributing to at my university! It’s a preview of Mockingjay – Part 2.
  • Ate three slices of leftover Jet’s pizza while watching an episode of Jane the Virgin! (I’m finally on season 2! That’s an accomplishment, right?)
  • Took a shower after realizing AFTER I hugged my dog that she’d rolled in poop! Yayyy.
  • And, last, but not least: Wrote 5,000 words in Time Travel Heist Story! Which means I’m caught up again and also now HALFWAY THROUGH NANOWRIMO!!

I’m off to have a dance party for one and to get ready for the birthday party I’m going to tonight. I hope your day’s been going all right and that the NaNo gods are treating you kindly.

Goal for Today: 2,000 + 3,000 (from yesterday)
Overall Goal: 25,000
Current Word Count: 25,070

Wordy Wednesday: Afternoon Sunlight

So yesterday was as busy as Tuesdays ever are this semester, so I didn’t get a chance to write. However, as usual, I also didn’t have any writing planned for the day, so I’m at least not any further behind now.

I haven’t gotten any writing done yet today, but as soon as I get my work done for the day, my plan is to hit that Word doc. The goal for today is to write 2,000 words, plus hopefully dip into the 1,500 words I’m still behind.

In the meantime, this week’s Wordy Wednesday is another poem.

Sunlight warm through worn,
dark jeans, legs stretched, toes pointed,
just to feel the delicious pull—
the strain that comes with forward movement:
this is what lazy afternoons look like,
watching Netflix on the floor,
a crewneck snug around my shoulders and
my world pulled tight around me

This place where I live—
this is what makes it home

Thanks for reading!

Goal for Today: 2,000 + 1,500 (from Friday)

Overall Goal: 19,000

Current Word Count: 15,504

NaNo Day 7: Game Time

This is going to be a short one, because I have All the Words to write today and not much time. (Which isn’t really a good excuse, because the things I’m doing instead of writing all afternoon/evening are tailgating and a football game. But yeah.)

I ended up only getting about 1k in last night, because once again it was one AM and my sleep schedule is getting too wonky to handle. But I didn’t have any writing scheduled for today, because of the game, and I’ve been writing since I woke up this morning anyway. So I’ve now gotten another 1k in so far today, which means I’m now only 3,000 words behind my goal. Also: just reached 10,000 words!! Whoohoooo.

While I’m away pretending to understand sportsball for the rest of the day, the Ch1Con team will be hosting our first writing sprint and virtual write-in of the season! They’re from 1-2 PM and 7-10 PM eastern, respectively. You can find more information on them here and follow our Twitter (@Ch1Con) for updates (including a link to the virtual write-in’s chat room when it goes live). I’m sad to miss these today, but the rest of the team is going to rock them. I hope you get to go!

Oh, and it’s NaNoWriMo’s annual Double Up Day, in which they challenge participants to double up their word counts. They also do this super cool thing where they give you twice the goodies if you donate today. If you’ve got the resources, you should do it.

Here’s a puppy playing with a (different kind of) football to make up for my absence:

Goal for Today: 0 + 2,000 (from Friday) + 2,000 (from Sunday)

Overall Goal: 13,000

Current Word Count: 10,050

NaNo Day 1: And So It Begins

Goodness, can you believe it’s already November 1st? As much as I love this month, it’s crazy how fast the year goes.

I’m absolutely terrified for how I’m going to handle everything this November. Senior year is kicking my butt at the moment, and add writing fifty thousand words and blogging every day on top of that? This is going to be interesting. (But also, like, what else is new, amiright? #College)

My NaNo this year is currently The Novel that Refuses to Be Named, also known as Time Travel Heist Story. I’ve been working on it since July-ish, but I realized a couple weeks ago that I need to start at a different place in the plot–so despite my best efforts to be productive with writing the past few months, I, once again, am beginning NaNoWriMo at Chapter One. (Yay accidentally playing by the rules?)

What this does mean is that I have a vague idea of what I want my characters and plot to look like, which goes against every instinct in my little pantser heart, but also means writing should HOPEFULLY be a little easier (and less time-consuming) this time ’round. Which also means hopefully I won’t die between now and November 30th.

Description from my NaNo profile:

Fifteen-year-old Regina is a sophomore at the prestigious Zeteo Academy, acclaimed for sending graduates everywhere from the White House to the moon. Zeteo breeds loyalty, bravery, and the ability to keep a secret–but the biggest secret is the boarding school’s unorthodox education itself, involving a dangerous, seemingly endless scavenger hunt. Called simply “the Game,” the scavenger hunt sends students around the world to gather clues leading to a prize so old even the rumors surrounding it have died.

When the rules of the Game change for the first time since its founding over a century ago–and, in the process, Regina becomes the first Zeteo student ever to come face to face with a game-runner–she decides it’s time the students of the Zeteo Academy finally figured out the truth about the Game that rules their lives.

Oh, and P.S. there’s time travel.

So yeah. This is going to be a veeery rough first draft (how does one even write time travel?), but I’m also in love with the plot and the world, so I can’t wait to dig in.

Are you competing in NaNoWriMo this year? If so, what are you writing about? (Also: wanna be buddies?)

Goal for Today: 5,000

Current Word Count: 271

Whoohoo! Let’s do this thang.

Oh, and P.S. Happy Day After Halloween from Hermione and Harry!

A Very Potter Halloween
